Spotted on Alhambra and T

Just some evidence that preservation seems to be sinking in...for a long time someone had a hanging sign that said "EYESORE" on the fence in front of this long-abandoned gas station. More recently, someone else added two more signs with different interpretations of the structure.

The current plan is to disassemble and restore the structure (it's a modular kit) and give it to the Towe Auto Museum. The property owner, D&S Development, wants to build a multi-story condo with ground floor basement parking on the site. He's got a good architect but city staff are having trouble with the idea of a four-story building on the site (most of the nearby structures are 1-2 story.)

I like the plans I have seen, although the one rendering they did of an earlier design looked kind of ridiculous. The initial sketches were pretty cool (the idea is to evoke the gas station's Art Deco touches in an iconic corner building) and hopefully they will be able to produce something equally distinct, while preserving the original structure for a new use as a museum piece. Wouldn't it be cool to have a genuine Art Deco gas station as the Towe's admission ticket booth, for example?

I don't agree that giving it to the Towe is a good idea, but am interested in seeing the building preserved. Who are the other people ionterested in aquiring it, do you know?

The other party was a person interested in relocating it to North 16th Street and opening a gas station, but that idea fell through when plans came up to put a large service station at the triangular lot where North 12th and North 16th become Hwy 160. So far as I know there are not other interested parties.

Since I posted this a few months back, the new building planned for the site has been approved by Planning Commission. The owners are a company called D&S Development, this is their website:
